Free WhatsApp link generator (wa.me link + QR code)

Last updated: 12 October 2026

Enter a phone number, add an optional message, and get a click-to-chat wa.me link you can paste anywhere — plus a downloadable QR code that opens the same chat when scanned. Everything runs in this page; nothing is uploaded and there is no sign-up.

Spaces, dashes, brackets and a leading plus or 00 are all fine. If you paste a full international number into the phone field, leave the country code blank.

What a wa.me link is

wa.me is WhatsApp's own short domain for starting a chat with a specific number. A link looks like https://wa.me/12025550101, where the digits after the slash are the number in international format with the country code first and no plus sign, spaces or brackets. When someone opens that link, WhatsApp takes over and opens a conversation with that contact — in the phone app if they are on a phone, or in WhatsApp Web if they are on a desktop.

You can also attach a message so the chat opens with the text already typed. That is done with a query string, ?text=, followed by the message with the spaces and punctuation URL-encoded. The person on the other end sees your text sitting in the composer and decides whether to send it, so a pre-filled message is a suggestion rather than an automatic send.

When to use a click-to-chat link

A click-to-chat link is the right tool when you want someone else to start the conversation. Put one on a printed flyer, a shop window, a business card, an email signature or a "contact us" page and you remove every bit of friction: no typing a number, no saving a contact first, no chance of a digit going missing. The QR code version is the same idea for a phone camera — the customer points their camera at the code and the chat opens ready to type.

Keep the link honest: it should lead to a number that is actually monitored. A click-to-chat link that never gets a reply is worse than no link at all.

WhatsApp link vs a bulk sender

A wa.me link is for one conversation at a time, started by the other person. It does not help when you already have a list of contacts and need to send to all of them — you cannot paste forty links and expect forty chats to appear. That job needs something that can open each conversation in turn and type your message into it.

If you are working from a spreadsheet, the practical route is the same one we cover in how to send WhatsApp messages from Excel or CSV: format the numbers, import the file, then let an extension drive the WhatsApp Web session you are already signed into. Use the link generator on this page for the handful of public-facing entry points, and a bulk sender for the list you own.

Frequently asked questions

Is a wa.me link free to use?

Yes. A wa.me link is just a URL that opens a chat with a given number, so there is nothing to pay for and no account to create beyond WhatsApp itself. The number has to be on WhatsApp for the chat to open.

Can I add a pre-filled message to a wa.me link?

Yes. Add ?text= followed by the URL-encoded message and WhatsApp opens the chat with that text already typed into the composer. The person still chooses whether to send it, and can edit it first.

Do I need WhatsApp Business or the Business API to use wa.me?

No. wa.me works with any WhatsApp account. The link opens the chat in the WhatsApp app on a phone or in WhatsApp Web on a computer, depending on where it is opened.

Sending the same message to a whole list?

A single link opens one chat. To message a list of contacts with personalised text, use the extension: it sends from your own WhatsApp Web session, one conversation at a time, with no Business API and no server.
